New BlackBerry 9720 announced running BlackBerry OS 7.1

BlackBerry has announced a new smartphone the BlackBerry 9720 which runs the old Blackberry OS 7.1 which last saw action in 2011. This doesn’t belong to the touch friendly BlackBerry OS 10 family.

One of the main reason is that BlackBerry 7.1 is still popular around the globe and is outselling the BlackBerry 10 devices.

“The BlackBerry 9720 smartphone gives you all the essentials of the BlackBerry smartphone experience to support a communications centric lifestyle. It has the best keyboard and functionality for BBM, as well as an updated BlackBerry 7 OS that adds many enhancements. It’s perfect for customers upgrading from a feature phone or entry-level Android or Windows Phone device, as well as existing BlackBerry smartphone customers, that want a richer experience and jump up in style and performance,” said Carlo Chiarello, Executive Vice President for Products at BlackBerry.

The device still offers limited touchscreen functions on a 2.8 inch screen with a 480×360 pixel resolution, 806MHz processor, 512MB RAM, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and 1,450 mAh battery with talk time up to 7 hours. The highlight is of course it’s full QWERTY keyboard. The BlackBerry 9720 will go on sale in the next few weeks, initially coming to Asia, Latin America, parts of Europe including the UK, Africa, and the Middle East. Pricing is yet to be announced, but will be determined by carriers.
