Activist hackers group from the collective known as Anonymous have accessed US government computers and stolen sensitive information since last year.

According to a leaked report, the FBI warned that they have found out about multiple breaches in government agencies. Since last December, the hackers have exploited a flaw in Adobe’s software to compromise the target systems and left backdoors in order to return to the machines later.

The hacking campaign affected the US Army, the Department of Energy, the Department of Health and Human Services, and possibly many more. FBI is investigating the scope of the hacking and has sent out memo to system administrators to check their systems, whether they have been compromised or not.

An internal email from Department of Energy Secretary revealed the data stolen during the Anonymous hack on the department includes :

  • 104,000 employees, contractors, and family members personal data.
  • 20,000 bank accounts information.

The email went on to say that officials were very concerned that the stolen banking information could lead to theft.

These are the data stolen from the Department of Energy alone. FBI wrote that “It is unknown exactly how many systems have been compromised, but it is a widespread problem that should be addressed.”
