Upgrade, modify and repair your phone block by block – Lego style

Everyone is talking about the latest iPhone with fingerprint sensor, Xperia with a stunning 20.7 megapixel camera and Note phablet with a 5.7 inch Full HD 1080p Super Amoled display. What if there is a smartphone that is truly customizable, with detachable blocks, allowing users to pick and choose the components that matter to them the most.

What is Phoneblok?

Think of it as a do-it-yourself smartphone. Phoneblok is a new kind of phone where consumers would be able to build their smartphone block by block or purchase a pre-assembled phone. It will be developed as an open source project.

If something breaks, you can easily replace the particular block or upgrade it to the latest one. Let’s say you like to take pictures, why not upgrade it with a better camera? Phoneblok will give you the ability to make a phone truly yours. You can choose the type of processor you want, how much RAM you would have and what kind of screen you would like. The options are endless.

Blok-Store

As the name suggests, it is a store where consumers can buy and build blocks, the components that power the smartphone. With the blok-store, consumers and developers can buy or sell blocks, it’s a thriving community. Consumers are free to choose the components from the company that they prefer.

It is Greener

Current phones are disposable. Millions of devices are thrown each day because they are old and worn out. More often than not, only one component causes the problem. Simply because electronic devices are not built to last. This makes electronic waste one of the fastest growing waste stream and our phone is one of the biggest cause.

Phoneblok focus on a greener approach. Users would be able to upgrade or replace individual parts, and would never have to throw away full phones ever again.

How to support Phonebloks

Phonebloks is still a concept at this point and is trying to get as much support as possible. The project is led by a designer from Netherlands, Dave Hakkens. He is gathering people for a crowdspeaking campaign. Phonebloks.com is currently down due to high traffic. You can support the project by joining their thunderclap page and share the project to your social networks and let your friends know about it.
